Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Turn Your Skills and Experience into a Formal QualificationΒ

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment process that allows you to get formal recognition for the skills, knowledge and experience which you have earned through work, previous training, volunteering, life experience or other relevant activities. Many people have strong practical skills but do not have a formal qualification to show anyone. RPL provides a way to have those existing skills assessed against the requirements of a qualification without repeating training skills they already have.Β

RPL is especially useful for experienced workers who have spent years developing their skills on the job. Instead of starting a course from the beginning, you can have your existing knowledge and workplace experience assessed by an approved Australian Registered Training Organization (RTO). If your skills meet the required competency standards, you will be able to receive the relevant qualifications.Β

What Is Recognition of Prior Learning?

The fashion industry values innovation, creativity and skilled in business workers. The Advanced Diploma in Applied Fashion Design & Merchandising will provide you with the skills necessary to create, manufacture and sell fashion collections. This certificate helps people to successfully combine their creative vision with the practical abilities required in the competitive fashion industry of today.

Your previous experience possibly come from:
Paid employment
Self-employment or running a business
Previous education and training
Workplace training
Voluntary work
Community activities
Informal learning
Practical industry experience
Life experience relevant to the qualification

The important factor is whether your existing skills and knowledge can demonstrate the competencies required for the qualification.

For example, a skilled electrician could have no formal qualifications but have years of practical experience. An experienced warehouse worker may already execute inventory, dispatch and storage activities on a daily basis. A store manager can have a lot of experience managing inventory, supervising employees and interacting with consumers. These existing skills can be assessed through an RPL in comparison to the criteria of the applicable qualification.

How Does RPL Work?

The RPL process normally begins with an initial discussion or application. You provide information about your work history, skills, previous training and experience. An assessor then reviews your evidence and determines what additional information may be required. The evidence you provide should demonstrate that you have the skills and knowledge required by the qualification. Depending on the qualification and your experience, the assessment may include a review of documents, professional discussions, practical demonstrations, workplace evidence or other appropriate assessment methods. The process generally follows three main stages:
1. Provide Evidence of Your Experience
You provide documents and other evidence that demonstrate your skills and workplace experience. This can include a resume, employment records, certificates, references, work samples, photographs, videos, workplace documents and other relevant evidence.
2. Skills Assessment and Review
You can be asked additional questions or asked to provide additional evidence if any points have not been fully demonstrated or if your evidence did not meet the standards.
3. Receive Your Qualification
In compliance with its assessment and certification standards, the RTO may provide the pertinent qualification or statement of attainment if the assessor finds no problems with your documentation.

What Evidence Is Required for RPL?

The evidence required depends on the qualification and the competencies being assessed. There is no single document that guarantees an RPL outcome. The assessor must determine whether the evidence is sufficient, valid, authentic, current and relevant. Common evidence can include:
Resume or CV
A detailed resume which can show your employment history, job responsibilities, skills and industry experience.
Employment Documents
Employment contracts, reference letters, position descriptions and other employer documents can help to verify your experience.
Pay Slips or Invoices
These can help to establish job or company activities and can be used to support your application if applicable.
Previous Qualifications and Certificates
Training certificates, licenses, statements of attainment and other relevant education records that can provide evidence of your previous learning.
Workplace Photos and Videos
Photographs or videos which can demonstrate your involvement in workplace activities where appropriate and permitted.
Work Samples and Documents
Reports, project files, plans, procedures, checklists, records, portfolios and other workplace documents that can help to demonstrate your competency.
Professional References
References from employers, supervisors or other appropriate people that can help to verify your responsibilities and experience.

Is RPL the Same as Online Learning?

No. RPL and traditional training are different pathways.

With traditional training, you normally complete learning and assessment activities designed to develop and demonstrate the required skills.

With RPL, the focus is on assessing skills and knowledge you have already gained through previous experience or learning.

Is RPL the Same as Online Learning?

Before starting an RPL application, it is important to identify the exact qualification you are seeking and understand its current status. Training package qualifications can be updated or replaced over time.

You should also make sure that your evidence relates directly to the competencies being assessed. More documents do not necessarily mean stronger evidence. Relevant, reliable and authentic evidence is more useful than simply providing a large collection of unrelated documents.

Moreover, you have to describe your professional experience. The RPL exam is based on your actual abilities and knowledge, and the assessor must be able to verify and evaluate the evidence you submit.

Who Can Apply for RPL?

RPL can be suitable for people from many professional and occupational backgrounds. It is particularly useful for individuals who have gained significant practical experience but have not completed formal training for their current role. RPL are suitable for:
Experienced Workers
People who have worked in an industry for several years and developed strong practical skills.
Skilled Professionals
Professionals who have gained knowledge and expertise through their employment but need a formal qualification.
Business Owners
Business owners who have developed management, operational, technical or trade skills through running their own business.
Career Changers
People who have developed transferable skills through previous employment and want to get a qualification related to their experience.
Workers Without Formal Qualifications
Individuals who have the practical skills required for their occupation but have never completed the relevant formal training.

Why Choose RPL?

One of the biggest advantages of RPL is that it can prevent experienced people from repeating the skills they already possess. If you can demonstrate competency through your existing experience, RPL may provide a more suitable pathway than completing an entire training program from the beginning.
Save Time
You may not need to complete training for skills which  you already demonstrate. The time required depends on the qualification, evidence and assessment outcome.
Recognize Existing Skills
RPL gives you an opportunity to have your practical workplace knowledge which can formally be assessed.
Support Career Development
When you seek new jobs or take on more responsibility, a formal qualification might help prove your ability.
Improve Professional Opportunities
Some employers and industries require or prefer formal qualifications for particular positions.
Build Confidence
Having your existing skills formally assessed can provide confidence that your workplace knowledge meets the relevant competency requirements.

RPL Is Different from Simply Buying a Certificate

A valid RPL method does not provide a shortcut to acquiring a qualification without assessment. It is necessary to assess your expertise and skills in terms of the requirements of the applicable qualification.

A genuine RPL process involves evidence collection, assessment and verification. If gaps are identified, you may need to provide additional evidence, complete further assessment or undertake training for areas where competency has not been demonstrated.

This is why choosing a properly registered Australian RTO and following its assessment requirements is important.
